FAQ’s

What does plastic surgery mean?

The term plastic surgery is derived from the ancient Greek word "Plastikos", which means to mould or give form. Plastic surgery aims to modify the shape of body structures to improve or restore the appearance of the deformed part.

What is the difference between Plastic Surgery, Cosmetic Surgery and Reconstructive Surgery?

Plastic surgery is a treatment modality to restore, reconstruct and improve the misshaped body parts for cosmetic and/or therapeutic purpose. Plastic surgery is further sub-divided into cosmetic surgery and reconstructive surgery.

Reconstructive surgery aims at correcting the physical form and function of a defect or deformity, which may be inborn or acquired due to illness or trauma, to just an acceptable degree, whereas cosmetic surgery is done solely for aesthetic reasons.

Will I have scaring after surgery?

Surgical scars are embarrassing. Some are very tough and they cannot be eliminated easily. People opting for cosmetic surgeries may have a question ‘Do the cosmetic surgeries leave the scars in place?’ Cosmetic surgeries are performed to improve the aesthetic appearance and therefore surgeons make all their efforts to minimise or hide the scars. They hide the scars in the folds of the skin, under the hairline or close incisions in a way that it leaves very minimal scars and are not easily visible.

The nature of scars after plastic surgeries depends on the skin type and healing capabilities of an individual. Some scars may vanish over time, some may require moderate care and some scars need appropriate treatments such as topical applications, dermabrasion and scar revision surgery.

Can I expect the removal of skin cancer during my consultation?

No, your first visit is for a consultation only. During the consultation, your doctor will evaluate the skin cancer and decide if the cancer needs to be removed at the physician’s office or requires hospital admission. He will also decide the appropriate time for the procedure. You will receive a probable date and time for your procedure, at the end of your consultation.

Why do we get wrinkles and when do they start?

As we age, the skin loses its collagen and elastin fibers and gets thinner. The secretion of oil from the sebaceous glands decreases and the skin tends to become drier. The fat in the subcutaneous layer also begins to gradually reduce. All these changes cause the skin to sag, leading to the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. There is no fixed age for the appearance of wrinkles. Both heredity and lifestyle play an important role in the development of wrinkles.
